How is the graduation grade calculated?

The recipe for the starting vote for the thesis is a work by chefs in Hell’s Kitchen. We should ask Carlo Cracco. He could explain it big time. We try

Ingredients of the recipe:

  • A nice white sheet
  • Calculator at hand … unless you are the “Euclid of 2016”
  • University booklet or statino on the table
  • Time q.b.
  • I hardly listen to urban legends, but rather ask the secretary
  • Know if your degree course belongs to the old or new system.

Preparation of the basic ingredients:

Have a TOP average. Refusing some low grades over the years is a good practice to keep the honor of your booklet high.

The exams are expressed in thirtieths, so you will have to transform them into one hundred and ten as the degree mark is expressed in 110.

Usually the exams in which you got the praise (30 and praise then … it should come a smile just thinking about it) are still counted as 30. In some universities, however, points are also awarded for that so instead of 30 could have a higher value. But for safety don’t consider it.

In some universities, to get the praise, one of the things that the committee members look at is precisely the presence of exams with honors and the subjects in which the praise was obtained. The more pertinent you are to the chosen professional the more your appeal grows.

For the new order the average must be calculated based on the CFU of each exam, so it is a weighted average, but for the old system it is a mathematical average between the grades.

The test is considered passed with a minimum grade of 66/110 (but we do not wish it to any graduating student).

For the praise … it depends on the degree course, the faculty, the university, the mood, the sympathy, the rain on graduation day, … in short “IT DEPENDS on which point you look at the world everything depends …”

The average is only the starting point for the graduation grade.

The points for the final test that are awarded by the degree commission and generally depend on:

  • thesis type (the experimental thesis gives the right to access a higher score)
  • quality of thesis work
  • quality of thesis discussion
  • to graduate in progress
  • have participated in Erasmus projects, Leonardo and so on and so forth
  • for those who have training … have had a good result

But remember that the points awarded are capped so if you start with a low score … you can’t expect to reach the praise. Usually it goes from a minimum of 3 points to a maximum of 9 in some universities (but usually the maximum is around 6/7 points).

Procedure for the old order:

Add up all the votes and divide the sum obtained by the number of exams (thus excluding the qualifications that do not have a mark out of thirty).

  • Multiply by 110
  • Divide by 30

Procedure for the new order:

  • Multiply the grade of each exam by the CFU of the corresponding exam
  • Sum the results
  • Divide the result obtained by the total of the credits obtained through the exams that give the right to a vote in thirtieth
  • Multiply by 110
  • Divide by 30

Here is the complex algorithm that will tell you what degree grade to perish

Weighted average = (exam grade1 x exam credit1) + (exam score2 x exam credit2) / total number of credits

Degree average = (weighted average x 110) / 30

Last step to be done: rounding, that is, if the result is 102.557821 if the part after the comma starts with 5 6 7 8 or 9, then it is rounded up to the upper integer (by excess), otherwise it is cut off (then it approaches by default). So our 102.557821 becomes 103.

For any doubt … ask at the secretary of your faculty. Having a clear idea on this subject is definitely an excellent anxiolytic for the thesis period.

Good accounts to all! And we hope that the bill you prepare will be to your liking!

Who starts well … ends better!
